Engineers wouldn't have designed the bays just to later see if, maybe, they could squeeze another AMRAAM in there. if it's designed with that space (and it has been stated it was), it's just a matter of designing a suitable tandem launcher. I don't think it will be too complex of a system either, but assuring clear separation from the internal bays might require a lot of testing which the program doesn't need right now. Also, there has been some confusion about the AIM-132. Recently there has been a statement that it won't be integrated into the *A/G* internal station (like the AMRAAM and Meteor can be), but I am very sure that did not apply to the dedicated A/A station (I can probably try to find the article for this again if pressed). This means the RAF won't be able to fit 4 ASRAAMS internally (why they would want to is beyond me anyway...probably why it's been omitted). This makes much more realistic load outs of 2 internal ASRAAMS and Meteors each possible, or (eventually) 2 asraams and 4 amraams...or 2 external asraams, 2 internal AMRAAMs or Meteors and internal A/G ordnance still possible.

I would not bet the rent. Engineers do a lot of things but companies design to requirements - 2 x AMRAAM + 2 x 2k JDAMs or 4 AMRAAM. My guess is that a twin AMRAAM launcher for the internal AG station would be quite complicated, because the weapons would probably be vertically and horizontally staggered, requiring a little fancy footwork in the ejector to clear the door.

Well, your average landing gear requires a liitle fancy foot work everytime they extent or retract........I know thats a over simplification but it has merit! Wink

They don't do it at 1000 mph.

Not twice, anyway.

Just emphasizing that it's not simple, even when done straight down.

Hey

Just wondering if anyone knows how many 500lbs JDAM the F-35 could hold internally?

Same # (2) as 1000lb JDAMs I'd wager.

2 x 2000 lbs JDAM,
2 x 1000 lbs JDAM,
2 x 500 lbs JDAM, or
8 x 284 lbs SDB

+

2 x AMRAAM

Of course we are talking internally only..............Really, even with 8-SDB's and 2-AMRAAM's. The F-35 will have a awesome strike capabilitity all within a very stealthy Platform. Wink

So the weapon bays arent able to carry more than 2x 500 lbs JDAM?

No, as you can't fit two 500 lbs bombs in the place of one 1,000 or 2,000 lbs Weapon. Really, its very unlikely the F-35 will carry to many 500 lbs bombs regardless. As most unharden targets will easily be taken out by SDB's. Which, can be carried in far greater numbers. (8 vs 2) If, greater power is needed than 1,000 or 2,000 lbs weapons would be selected..........I guess you could drop two SDB's at the same time for a single target if you liked?

Corsair, I guess we agree fully on the potency and potential of the SDB-type design? Shocked

The latest mod F-22 armed with latest mod SDB, is perhaps the deadliest strike aircraft in existence today.

Respects.

Until the F-35 arrives that is.............as the F-35 is design from the outset as a Striker. Wink
