I speculate the turn was used to let the chase aircraft move close, while staying out of the jet blast. More than 40,000 pounds of thrust would probably knock a following aircraft about.

It looks to me like they were in a wind up turn and the camera was positioned to get a clear shot of the nozzle while the AB lit.

A successful windup turn will meet the following test criteria:

All instrumented parameters recorded properly.

Speed did not change more than 5 knots during the smooth portion of the maneuver.

A smooth application of stick force which stays on one side of the friction band throughout the maneuver.

A smooth increase in g throughout the maneuver.

Here's a scan of a similar event - a long long time ago -

I'd say it's an Olympus being tested on a Vulcan but it looks kinda small.

I don't know why they were in a turn during the test. I know it was practiced that way in all the sim tests of the run cards.

There won't be any more flights for maybe 2-3 weeks, the jet is down while some things are checked/tested.

Its an RB199 (Tornado engine) being flown in a half fuselage under the Avro Vulcan FTB. At the sharp end it had a 27mm Mauser canon used for gun gas ingestion.

The largest five engined fighter in the world, it got some strange comments when cleared hot onto the ranges.

The F-35 has made a total of seven flights now. See: F-35 Lightning II logs flight progress

Is there any chance that it will fly again this weekend.

I would actually be able to hang out for a while at the airfield (well, the Wal-Mart parking lot really) this time.

Sorry, no chance. Next flight is at least a couple of weeks away.

Hi Sferrin, thank you for the link! I definitely added some of those photos to the F-35 photo gallery.

Here's some examples:

F-35 Lightning II fourth flight - January 23th, 2007

Flight Global ran an article on the resumption of Lightning II flight test.

Quote:
First F-35 resumes flight tests

Flight International 13/03/07

Lockheed Martin's first F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) returned to flight on 5 March after a software update to incorporate performance data from its first seven flights. Aircraft AA-1 is expected to fly twice weekly as the company continues to expand the flight envelope.

The second JSF - the first short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) F-35B and the first with weight-optimised airframe - is now scheduled to fly in May-June 2008. Final assembly of the aircraft, BF-1, is already under way at Lockheed's Fort Worth, Texas plant.

"We mated the centre fuselage and forward fuselage in January, and the aft fuselage will ship from BAE Systems in early April," says F-35 programme general manager Dan Crowley. "We will complete the wing in June." Roll-out is planned for year-end, and captive hover tests for the second quarter of 2008, he says.

Design release for the STOVL F-35B is 98% complete, 70% for the conventional take-off and landing F-35A and 15% for the F-35C carrier variant (CV). The final critical design review, for the CV, is planned for June, having been delayed from November 2006 and the first F-35C, aircraft F-1, is now planned to fly in mid-2009.
