Does anyone know what Block 30's will go to the 122FW 163FS - if any? Understand they are to transition from Block 25 to 30 soon?
Also, will they - like 174FW did - move from low-viz to high-viz markings on the tail? (grey to black letters & numbers?) |

Hi Niels,
The 163rd FS / 122nd FW will receive a mix of "Small Inlet" Block-30s coming from the ANG units in MI and NY. They are expected to continue with the current "FW" tail markings.

None has made the transfer so far!! The first ones are expected in this fall as the current ANG AEF (NY, SD) returns home.

| 122nd's only high vis tails are the 122FW tail (84-1377) and the 163FS tail (84-1264). 264 is supposed to be painted up in WWII P-47 colors for our unit's heritage before she goes to AMARC. I believe there's a listing of tail numbers coming from Selfrige and Syracuse but I haven't seen it yet. We haven't started any transfers yet, other than sending 85-1416 for a one time flight to AMARC because it needed a wing change...so she's retired now. |

What unit did the 122FW 163FS inheret from WWII? Thought I had a pretty good idea about the various units, but so many changed numbering once WWII was over that it is hard to keep track of all.
BTW, made a F-4E model of the 122FW 163FS AF68-0305 not too long ago - one of my better F-4's

The two pilots of MANG's final F-16 flight said they were sorry to see the familiar planes go.
"It's a pretty emotional time," said Maj. Jason Green, who completed his final F-16 flight Friday. "It's a premier fighter that we've flown over the skies of Montana and the skies of Iraq."
Mostly, though, they're happy to still have the chance to fly. For a while, it didn't look like that would be the case, said MANG spokesman Maj. Rick Anderson.
When military officials decided to take the F-16s out of Montana, they originally had no intention of replacing them, Anderson said.
"It was kind of a kick in the stomach," Anderson said. "We had a great mission, then we went to no mission, now we have another great mission."
The aircraft switch is part of a slight change in MANG's mission, to make the unit's focus better align with the geographic resources they have available.
F-16s are designated for both air-to-air and bombing missions. Because there are no bombing ranges in Montana, MANG pilots had to fly more than 400 miles to Idaho or Utah to practice that skill.
The F-15, an older model jet, is used only for air-to-air combat. MANG pilots will forget about bombing, and take advantage of Big Sky Country's ample airspace to practice dog fighting, Anderson said.
F-15s are bigger and heavier than the F-16s, and have two engines instead of one. The Air Force is sending MANG pilots to training centers in Florida and Oregon, where they will spend five months getting comfortable with the new jets.
"Our wing commander describes it as a flying tennis court compared to (the F-16)," Anderson said.

I'll have to get back to you about the heritage. A couple years ago our base historian dug up a WWII unit that was somehow connected to our heritage and I can't remember who right now.
The heritage unit flew P-47 Thunderbolts...we may be going Thunderbolt II next year.  |

News and rumors abound. Latest heard...upgrade to block 30s until 2010...then convert to A-10s. Nothing's in stone until something different is on our ramp. As of right now we've sent one block 25 away and have yet to receive our first block 30.
We were also under the impression that we'd be a block 30 unit until they retired in 2016, but mission requirements change. Who knows...lol. |

Wow, strange seeing those FY83-Vipers finally beein retired. Found it funny that FY84 was retired earlier than FY83.
Any of these Vipers have anywhere near the same hours as 83-1165? |
