Do you feel there should be a format for job postings?

Or should people just post an email address and solicit your personal infomation?

A poster could be anyone (this is the internet). Trying to solicit the personal info of folks with exceptional skills. And even if one is a recruiter, he can post the link to his company’s web site so the poor guy who just gets out and is looking for a job can do a little research on where he might take a job.

You will find most recruiters are very vague about everything… why? Because 90% of the time they are not in the position to hire you. They are only collecting info to attempt to bid on a contract and prove they have a work force or they simply want to pimp your resume out for money.

If you do a little reading on here you find a large amount of guys who jumped headfirst into contracting and wound up with the wrong company and got burned bad. Too many guys get nervous and walk into this with the attitude “you need them” when in fact “they need you”.

I think it should be MANDATORY for all recruiters that come on here to post at least the following:
  • Their name
  • The company they represent
  • The contract’s title and status …meaning they have the contract in hand or it’s a pipe dream
  • The working location
  • The salary range
  • The length of the contract
  • The details (hours, living location, bla bla)
  • And last but not least, the benefits of working for their company.

Yes … preferably with a legitimate web site to go along with it.

These companies that keep fishing for resumes are a waste of time. It would be a nice if we could verify if a company has actual positions open instead of trying to win a contract award. I personally know someone who was strung along for months with Dyncorp for jobs in the UAE, of course Dyncorp never won the contract.

It would definitely be nice if there was a way to verify these types of posts. A requirement to provide an outside website with details about the company and the available positions would be a great start. Someone should never be asked for a resume from a stranger. Every website I've ever applied through has a portal where you submit it directly to their system, not to johndoe@wastemytime.com Evil or Very Mad

I totally agree with Viper, Vark and Mech. I've seen some pretty vague job postings recently that make me a little suspicious.

I think the recruiters that come on this site are decent enough people, they just go about things all wrong. I made two different contacts from this site, both were just headhunters; one didn't even want to give the name of the company he was hiring for. The other tells me about a UAE job and makes promises about a huge base salary, when I told him I was on the Block 60 program and handn't heard about the type of money he was offering...well you know...he never called me back. The bottom line don't be so quick to jump at a perceived opportunity. As for a standard job ad format, I think it's a good idea, maybe something along the lines of what JSFIRM.com uses. There you have contact names, phone numbers and web sites. I only contacted three company's from that site, but each was a good professional experience.

This is a good example of someone releasing their personal information without knowing who they sent it to.

This is not a safe practice.

So, did you find a job?

Actually, my post wasn't a good example of releasing personal information, unless you consider an email address personal.

I replied to the ads with a quick two line request for more info. As for finding a job...I almost took a position in San Angelo, TX with L-3, but fortunatly I received a job offer from a company right here on White Sands Missile Range doing tests for different weapon systems. The L-3 folks were great, hosted me for the day and they have a real nice facility, I didn't want to move the family right now. I found that job on JSFIRM. Viperkeeper, you're absolutly right, folks should NEVER give out personal info unless they know who's on the receiving end. Good luck to everyone that's looking, all I can say is keep you're head up and keep reaching out.

Hey Viper,

As everyone knows I've been here a long time and now a headhunter, or as we like to think a staffing counselor. In the 4 years since I've been a member I have only posted 2 jobs and neither had a good response. Let me try to educate everyone here on how most contract jobs in the states work when going with a staffing firm.

  1. Every opening we post is valid and needs to be filled now. They are not for positions that we hope will open up.
  2. We do not need personal info at first, as a matter of fact all resumes are sanitized and names removed. This prevents our clients from contacting you directly.
  3. Any benefits under a contract job come from the staffing firm until either the end of the contract or being hired on, which at that point become the benes the client offers take effect.
  4. We NEVER give out our clients name until we know they are interested in you. Reason being we are protecting ourselves. If we give you the name you could back door us and go straight to the client. We really do work hard for the orders we get and don't want to lose them and get screwed.
  5. These companies compensate us because we weed through the dead wood and save the client time and energy. You have no idea how many resumes we see from folks who have been sandwich artist's from Subway, yet they are applying for an IT or technical job. My having 22 years working jets lets our client know if I submit a candidate, they are qualified.
  6. I know you would like all the details up front but it’s not always possible. The location, length, and salary range are legit questions, sometimes the location is vague but it could be due to security, or say if there is only one aerospace firm in a town or region it would give away our client and once again we could be back doored.
  7. At some point in time yes, we would need personal info. So please be prepared and also very patient, these things do not happen overnight.
  8. Please also remember this is for stateside only!!!!!!!!!!

I know I dragged on here, sorry for that but the bottom line is business is business. I loved my USAF career and now have a new one. I have and never will promise something I can not deliver. If anyone ever has any questions about contract work I will be happy to answer them. Please feel free to either call me or e-mail me. My work phone is 301-739-6900, and my e-mail is garyhayes@spherion.com

Gary,

It's good you posted this as it gives the folks out there an idea of what headhunters do. Your right, business is business folks just need to do a bit of research before they shot their info all over the world. And while your company is not fly by night.... many are and i'm sure you know this.

About a year and a half after I started working for the dutch I received a phone call about "a great new opening in a peaceful middle east country"... I was like WHAT? ... when I asked "is this LMAERO?" I got the whole "We work for a MAJOR aviation firm that has a contract RIGHT NOW" ... as you guessed I kept them on the phone wasting their coin on the call. Of course I asked them why would I just not find out who had the contract and call them myself. And as always I got the whole "They don't hire that way" crap.

Myself like others made the mistake of sending a resume to one of the "headhunters" out there and now pay for it with BS emails and phone calls.

I'm positive you do nothing of the sorts BUT others do...

So please don't see any of my posts as an attack against you or your firm. I'm only trying to get people to perform some research before looking for a job including what is required of them at work. There are way too many RESUME' PIMPS out there.

Cheers, GERB Beer
